On Thursday, August 20th, Akron Children's Hospital held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of their new Inpatient Behavioral Health unit.
The 47,000-sf interior buildout of the Kay Jewelers Pavilion's fifth floor will bring Akron Children's behavioral health support to the next level. The new unit will aid the hospital in serving patients through a range of specialized therapy and treatment amenities that align with modern-day needs.
The department will expand from 24 beds to a new capacity of 40 beds, featuring a crisis stabilization unit where parents stay with their child as a full partner in therapy, a tiered hospitalization experience for patients ages 5 to 18, a spacious gym for structured activities, and more.
As akronchildrens.org shared, "The new unit will not only expand Akron Children's capacity for inpatient behavioral healthcare, it will reshape how that care is delivered,' said Dr. Eva Szigethy, the Lois C. Orr Endowed Chair in Pediatric at Akron Children's."
The interior includes common areas, sensory rooms, art and gross-motor therapy spaces, classrooms, and private patient rooms with full bathrooms. The outdoor courtyard will feature rubber playground tile, turfs, and benches to support therapeutic outdoor activities.
