This summer, Summit Construction Company (SCC) began an extensive project: constructing a $10.5 million Innovation Center for Buckeye Hill Career Center (BHCC). SCC is serving as a Construction Manger-At Risk for the BHCC project alongside VSWC Architects.
The Innovation Center is part of a larger act issued by Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC), which allocated $88 million in funding to help underserved Appalachian school districts. The Innovation Center will provide BHCC students and faculty with top-of-the-line academic infrastructure.

The first floor, projected at 10,500 Sq. ft, will house a Health and Wellness Center containing a nursing training lab. Along with the nursing lab, there will be a dental lab, designed to be eight stations with an imaging room, a dedicated space for capturing images of patient’s teeth, jaw, and or facial bones/structure. The second floor, projected at 7,500 Sq. ft, will house new administrative buildings. The first floor will be a space where students can provide free health care to community members, allowing BHCC students to care for patients before graduating, giving them vital experience within their field.
Construction has already gone underway, and things are proving to be a challenge, but a worthwhile one. “Due to soil conditions, we have to do a 5’ undercut, roll, inspect and replace in our building pad, which required us to relocate the main path for water as well as the primary fiber optics line onto the campus,” said Kiery Frye, superintendent. “The parking lots were impeded by fiber lines as well, so it required considerable coordination with providers, vendors, and subcontractors for the relocations. Buckeye Hills provides Daycare and educational programs year-round, so we must minimize any disruption of service especially with major utilities.”
Frye, when asked about the project, proudly saw its impact on the BHCC students, “The Innovation Center is going to provide the students of Buckeye Hills with the most valuable resource in preparing to enter any workforce experience. Graduates will leave with the pride of being of service to their community, the knowledge needed to succeed in their field, and the confidence that they can get it done.”
