Cleveland, Ohio
Construction for Urban Community School’s newest campus addition, the Roundstone Athletic Center, continues in Cleveland. Students from UCS joined us for a tour of the new 30,000 SF facility in the final week of their very first Welding Academy.
“At UCS, our middle school students participate in weekly Academies—unique, hands-on classes that go beyond traditional subjects. These experiences range from lacrosse and rowing to welding, knitting, and improv, and are led by specials teachers, nonprofit partners, and volunteers from across the city.
This year, we partnered with Adventure Lab to launch our first-ever Welding Academy. Under the guidance of their team, students explored welding through a variety of interactive experiences. They practiced using specialized “chocolate welders,” worked with virtual reality tools, and ultimately had the opportunity to make real welds to take home. Along the way, students learned essential safety protocols, welding terminology, and gained insight into potential careers in the field.” - Jake Taylor, Director of Middle School

The tour began in the Summit trailer, where President of UCS, Tom Gill, asked the middle schoolers gathered around the blueprints “how do you think the architect knows what to build?”

This great question kickstarted the discussion about how UCS leaders make decisions for the future, and how the construction of a new building can help support that vision.
The tour was led by Project Manager, Chris Ciraldo, and Superintendent, Matt Horning. Chris and Matt paused to explain what subcontractors were working on throughout the visit, offering a firsthand look at how the skills the students had been learning were being applied to build the gym they will soon call home.

Ending with a Q&A discussion and thoughts into the future, we talked about how the new Athletic Center will enhance Urban Community School’s athletic program capabilities, and how it opens new doors to the community.
